Decking options

Choose the best decking for your garden needs

Composite decking (WPC—Wood Plastic Composite) is an excellent option for low maintenance and eco-friendliness. Made from recycled wood fibers and plastic, it doesn’t require oil treatments to withstand Irish weather. We carefully select brands that look and feel as natural as possible while also being scratch- and impact-resistant.

Through hands-on testing in our workshop and experience installing composite decking from various suppliers, we’ve gained a strong understanding of their technical details. This allows us to confidently recommend the best options for your needs, whether for a commercial or home deck.

Whether softwood or hardwood, timber decking is a sustainable and beautiful choice. While it does need regular maintenance, like oiling, cleaning, and refinishing, it can last for years with the proper care.

  • Softwood decking: (pine, spruce, Douglas fir, cedar, or larch) typically last 10-15  years with proper upkeep. Though it requires regular treatment, softwood is popular for its affordability, versatility, and the warm patina it develops over time.
  • Hardwood decking: (such as Yellow Balau or Massaranduba) is crafted from dense, naturally durable wood species that resist rot, decay, and insects with minimal treatment. While hardwood costs more upfront, it’s an excellent long-term investment, offering unmatched durability and beauty.

Each type of decking has its own material requirements, so we always adapt our   installation process to suit the on-site conditions and the specific decking used.

We  ensure we’re equipped with the right tools and fixings for the job.

Protect your timber decking

Additionally, we provide the option of applying essential treatments to your timber decking in our workshop under warm, dry conditions. This ensures optimal protection before installation, enhancing durability and longevity.

Applying the treatment in warm, dry indoor conditions is important  for several reasons:

  • The wood will absorb the treatments more effectively, ensuring longer-lasting protection.
  • The content of moisture is kept under control in indoor environments.
  • Treatment will dry and cure more uniformly.
  • Treating the timber indoors prevents issues caused by external weather changes, which can interfere with the drying and absorption process.

Our approach to subframes Longevity with double-treated Wood

Quality and durability are at the heart of everything we do. For our timber substructures, we acquire pressure-treated wood, known for its longevity and resistance to microorganisms and insect damage.

However, while pressure-treated lumber provides excellent protection against pests and decay, it does not prevent weathering from exposure to the elements.

To address this, we apply a deep penetrating, oil-based treatment that nourishes the wood and makes it highly water-repellent, offering superior protection against damp conditions beneath a deck.

We go the extra mile to ensure durability because decking board manufacturers provide warranties of up to 25 years, and we believe your substructures should be just as long-lasting as your composite decking. Our commitment to quality guarantees that our structures remain strong and resilient, regardless of the weather. That’s why we confidently offer a 24-month warranty on our workmanship, giving you peace of mind.

Aluminium Joists for

Low-Profile Deck Subframe

We recommend using aluminium joists for the subframes for low-profile decks built on solid bases such as concrete. Aluminium joists are an excellent choice for these applications due to their superior resistance to damp conditions and enhanced strength compared to wooden joists of the same section size.

An essential requirement for composite decking is ensuring a minimum of 100mm net-free area for ventilation. Proper airflow beneath the deck is vital to allow air circulation, facilitate drainage, and ensure the deck dries effectively.

Aluminium joists are ideal for deck structures with a total height of less than 100mm. Their slim profile and robust durability allow adequate ventilation while maintaining structural integrity, even in low-clearance applications.

With aluminium joists, your low-profile deck benefits from a long-lasting, resilient subframe that supports optimal deck performance and longevity.

Decking installation

5 Steps to deck installation

Step 01

Base preparation

We begin by clearing the area of any debris and assessing the ground. If required, we level the ground and adjust it to ensure proper drainage. For soil-based foundations, a weed membrane is installed to prevent unwanted growth beneath the deck.

Step 02

Building the structure frame

The next step involves constructing the frame that supports the decking. The frame configuration is tailored to the decking design and includes setting the posts at the correct height. A crucial detail is ensuring the subframe has a slight slope, directing water away from the wall or structure to which the deck is attached.

Step 03

Installing the joists

We then install the joists, ensuring precise spacing to provide optimal support for the deck. For domestic projects, the distance is 400mm, and for commercial projects, it is 300mm. These measurements are calculated as centre-to-centre distances, meaning the distance is measured from the centre of one timber element to the centre of the next.

Step 04

Applying joist tap

To protect the timber subframe, we apply joist tape to the top of each joist. This tape prevents water pooling and reduces the risk of timber rot, ensuring the deck’s longevity. Additionally, the tape prevents the subframe from being visible through the gaps between the decking boards.

Step 05

Placing the decking board

The decking boards are then carefully laid onto the structure, aligned for a seamless finish. We complete the installation with final touches like corner wraps or fascia boards, giving the deck a polished and professional appearance.
